Local 947 Saddened to Announce Passing of Former President Wayne Michael.
On Sunday, February 17, former Local 947 President, Wayne Michael, passed away.
Wayne served as Local 947 President from 1988-1995 and led our Local during some of the most trying and turbulent times in the history of our organization. More than any one person, he was the driving force behind reorganizing our union in 1988.
During his tenure as President, union members fought to gain the overtime compensation guaranteed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). At that time, union members were segregated into two fire stations, assigned their holidays by Admin, and had limited shift trade opportunities. After several attempts to work with the City to resolve the FLSA dispute the union was forced to take legal action.
Because of Wayne's leadership and advocacy Greensboro firefighters enjoy FLSA overtime compensation today.
In addition to his union work, Wayne saw the importance of participating in charitable and educational events in Greensboro. Under his leadership, Local 947 purchased a fire safety house and developed and fire safety program that educated literally thousands of children throughout Greensboro and Guilford County. Wayne also was instrumental in getting Local 947 involved in fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)
The Professional Fire Fighters of Greensboro would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Michael family. We also would like to remember Wayne's service and sacrifice on behalf of Local 947 members. We have a Local today because of his tenacity and vision.
RIP, President Michael.

Since 1954, IAFF members have shown an unwavering commitment to defeating muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases. Funds are raised primarily through MDA signature Fill the Boot campaign, in which member fire fighters gather on streets across the country collecting money in their boots from neighbors and passersby. For 60 years strong, our nations heroes have raised more than $558 million to save and improve lives of families fighting muscle disease. Dollars collected in boots throughout the decades are translating into game-changing research progress today.
