About Local 3217
Local 3217, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Professional Firefighters Association, was chartered as an affiliate with the IAFF on September 20th, 1989 with 94 members. The formation of L3217 was a result of the formation of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority in 1987 to absorb the former Federal Firefighters Association, Local 1 affiliate, firefighters that had worked at the airports under the FAA.
Fast forward to today the members of L3217 are tasked with protection the flying public at Ronald Raegan National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport along with supporting our mutual aid partners. The members of L3217 staff a combined four fire stations encompassing response areas of Alexandria, Arlington, Loudoun, and Fairfax Counties. Members currently operate on the three shift system known as the "NOVA" schedule to provide 24/7/365 coverage. Members are tasked with providing specialized Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), structural fire protection, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), hazardous materials response, and river rescue capabilities to the flying public and our surrounding jurisdictions.
